Notes[]

  1. This version of Password began at 4:00 p.m., replacing the long-running Soap Dark Shadows (much to the fandom's dismay), and followed another Soap, One Life to Live. It also marked a return to Daytime for Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions after the cancellation of The Match Game on NBC 18 months ago, as well as a move to Hollywood, California, after many productions in New York City since 1946. Format 1 (Password) begins.
  2. Somewhere between the premiere week and this week, the borders around the scoreboard were changed to black, and a hyphen was put in between both sides of said scoreboard. The digits were still solaris. Also, some of the hexagons on the desk are toned down.
  3. Amusingly enough, this and the following week featured someone from the MacRae family playing the game. By this week, the microphones are now on holders instead of being sunk into the desk like before.
  4. Last week in the 4:00 p.m. timeslot.
  5. The show moves to 12:30 p.m. to swap places with reruns of Love, American Style, which replaced the ABC Soap A World Apart. The Thursday episode may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of President Nixon's address to a joint session of congress. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  6. By this week, the scoreboard now used eggcrates instead of solaris. Also, the carpeting was given a new pattern.
  7. Art Linkletter was listed on the taping tickets. Linkletter would eventually play six weeks later.
  8. The Friday episode may have been taped but never shown due to a marathon of ABC's Saturday Morning Programs. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  9. The Thursday and Friday episodes may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of President Nixon's State of the Union Address and the Democratic response to it respectively. It's unclear if they were ever rescheduled.
  10. Beep sounds for the Betting Word timer different by this week.
  11. 2,000th episode (CBS and ABC combined) celebrated on February 29. The CBS Primetime run actually had 201 episodes (in addition to the 1,555 Daytime episodes), despite 208 being listed as the final count. This was due to skipping over numbers in the labeling process due to preemptions. By February 29, the ABC run had reached 237 episodes.
  12. Last week in the 12:30 p.m. timeslot.
  13. To commemorate one year on ABC, the show taped two weeks of a Grand Championship with big winners from past shows. Both weeks used the same pair of celebrities. Also, the show moves to Noon, with its lead-in, reruns of Bewitched, moving a half-hour earlier. Lastly, the series gained a brand new follow-up game show at 12:30 p.m., hosted by Tom Kennedy for Stefan Hatos-Monty hall Productions. It was titled Split Second.
  14. Grand Championship continues through Wednesday.
  15. Peter Lawford ended up playing for two consecutive weeks in a row.
  16. The Wednesday episode may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of President Nixon's trip to Warsaw, Poland. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  17. Between this Week and Week #049, production moved to ABC Vine Street Theater.
  18. The Friday episode may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of Governor George Wallace's arrival in Montgomery, Alabama. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  19. Championship Round Week.
  20. It's unclear if the Friday episode was taped but never shown.
  21. On Friday, a classic episode of The Odd Couple with Allen Ludden guest-starring, aired on ABC.
  22. The Odd Couple cast.
  23. One episode was a special charity edition with Jo Anne Worley & Greg Morris.
  24. The Soap, The Young and the Restless, premiered on CBS on this date, and would provide fierce competition for the then two-year old ABC run of Password. In the coming months, the show would attempt many gimmick weeks in an effort to keep the game fresh and interesting for the viewers.
  25. Carol & Elizabeth were booked to play Password once again, possibly to celebrate the beginning of the third year of this version.
  26. Future Country music star Naomi Judd played as a contestant on this week.
  27. Originally scheduled for June 11-15, 1973. Preempted for Watergate coverage. Grand Champion Lew Retrum and Elizabeth Montgomery play against six different pairs of celebrity challengers.
  28. Originally scheduled for June 18-22 and June 25-29, 1973. Preempted for Watergate coverage. Grand Champion Lew Retrum and Carol Burnett play against six different pairs of celebrity challengers, including former Grand Champion Martha Peukert.
  29. Originally scheduled for July 02-06, 1973. Reruns of The Brady Bunch becomes Password's new lead-in show. Also, a new game show called The Girl In My Life replaces The Dating Game at 2:30 p.m.
  30. Originally scheduled for July 09-13, 1973.
  31. Originally scheduled for July 16-20, 1973.
  32. Originally scheduled for July 23-27, 1973.

  34. Rematch Week.
  35. Rematch Week.
  36. Second Quarterly Contest Week.
  37. By this week, each correct answer in the lightning round was now worth $100. Also, new beeps for the Betting Word timer were in use.
  38. Rematch Week.
  39. Carol Burnett and Elizabeth Montgomery play against six different pairs of celebrity challengers, including Grand Champions Lew Retrum and Martha Peukert.
  40. Third Quarterly Contest Week.
  41. Betty White played on Monday. It's possible Nipsey was late for the taping.
  42. Celebrities, Their Children, and Their mothers Week. This may have been also in celebration of four years on ABC. By this week, matches were now played in a Best 2 Out of 3 structure. Cards that say anywhere from 0-1 would pop up to indicate that a game was won.
  43. Footage from this week appeared in ABC's 1974-1975 season preview reel.
  44. Fourth Quarterly Contest Week.
  45. Third Annual Grand Championship.
  46. The $10,000 Pyramid moves from CBS to ABC to 4:00 p.m., replacing Love, American Style reruns, which had previously been at 12:30 p.m.
  47. The Tuesday episode may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of President Nixon's visit to Moscow, U.S.S.R. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  48. Celebrity Charity Week. All week long, Elizabeth Montgomery and her future husband take on all comers from Ironside, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, M*A*S*H, Maude, Mission: Impossible, and The Rookies. It was during this week that the program began gradually transitioning to the All-Star era, which began in November. Also by this week, there was now a Daytime Emmy setpiece imprinted behind the Password logo to indicate that the program had become the very first Daytime Emmy Game Show winner.
  49. Celebrity Charity Week. All week long, Monty Hall hosts as Allen Ludden plays the game against Elizabeth Montgomery.
  50. Same as previous week, with Grand Champion Lew Retrum among those playing.
  51. Celebrity Charity Week; Allen returns to hosting. The Wednesday episode may have been taped but never shown due to coverage of President Nixon's impeachment, which ultimately led to him resigning from office on August 09. It's unclear if it was ever rescheduled.
  52. Fifth Quarterly Contest Week.
  53. Last civilian week for now.
  54. Celebrities and Their Children Week.

  58. Celebrity Husbands & Wives Charity Week; Allen returns to hosting.
  59. Celebrity Charity Week. Richard Long died about three months after the taping of this week.
  60. Celebrity Charity Week. All week long, Carol Burnett & Vicki Lawrence take on all comers, including Grand Champions Lew Retrum and Martha Peukert.
  61. Winners from Past Years Week I.
  62. Winners from Past Years Week II.
  63. Producers & Writers Charity Week. People who wrote and produced for then-current hit TV Shows played. End of Format 1 (Password) and also of the original ABC set and music package. It's possible a repeat of a past celebrity charity tournament was shown for the following week of November 11-15. Regardless, there were no new episodes for that week.
  64. Format 2 (Password All-Stars) begins. Also, a brand new set was built, as well as the composition of a brand new music package. The announcer now no longer whispers the password, a practice that wouldn't return until Super Password in October 1986. It was replaced with a series of electronic typing beeps. All-Star Tournament 1, Preliminaries/Quarterfinals Week 1. Don Galloway was the winner of $5,000.
